These Truths Are Self Evident

In Catholicism we believe in certain truths. These truths define our faith.

In fact, at every mass we recite The Apostle’s Creed  which lays out the tenants of our faith: “I believe in God, the Father Almighty…” Each time we go to mass we reaffirm this belief. Given what we know today by way of breakthroughs in technology and science, many critics scoff at this creed finding that it refers to a time when life was more simple. It is therefore ironic that while many Liberals and Progressives mock the Church for its stands and its creeds, the Left has its own creed. It’s just packaged differently. This whole notion of creeds came to my attention when a friend of mine blasted this out to all of his email contacts:

  1. If you believe that tax cuts for the rich benefit the poor or middle class, please de-friend me.
  2. If you have less than $15 million in net worth and still call the estate tax the “death tax”, please de-friend me.
  3. If you don’t believe the earth is warming due to greenhouse gases, please de-friend me.
  4. If you believe everyone in the USA should have health insurance, please de-friend me.

It was a fairly aggressive stance.  He was saying that if you don’t believe what I believe then we should no longer be friends. Imagine if a Catholic lay person sent this out to his friends! I can hardly imagine the scope of rebuke and criticism.

You see this list that my friend sent out is part of the “Leftist Creed.”  The difference in creeds is that the Catholic one is inspired by God and deals with the relevancy of God presence in our lives; the Left’s creed is created by man as the foundation and pillar of government as its basis and support system.

For Catholics, the creed is a statement of faith, hope and our undying faith in Christ. Something greater than us. For the Left, faith and hope are placed in the bureaucracy of government: the belief that government is good and has the power to alleviate suffering.

I harbor no allusions regarding government. I detest and loath it. I am an American with strong Latino roots. Latinos know all too well from experience how corrupt politicians are. Just look at Venezuela, Ecuador and Cuba. This distrust of all things related to politics is quite common in Latin America. Less so here in the states. Barack Obama and FDR are two politicians who come to mind, both of who governed and believed that the power of the State could solve all of society’s ills.

Given my friend’s myopic belief in the Leftist Creed, he is willing to forgo friendships over it.  I wanted to address his points, if not with him directly then here.

  •  Taxes: The State and the establishment (teachers, media, etc.) always take the high ground, arguing over the moral correctness of paying taxes. They habitually sight the worst case alternatives when arguing for higher taxes. The homeless mother who would live on the streets if not for government housing; the lunch program for children who would otherwise starve. By claiming the high ground, all others who don’t pay their fair share are labeled as “cheats” and “tax evaders.” For me, taxes are government sanctioned theft. The State is claiming a right to your wages simply because you live here. Theft is to take someone’s property against his will, i.e., by force or fraud. If I don’t pay my taxes, I will end up in jail. How is that any different than being robbed by a mugger who will harm or kill me if I don’t turn over my wallet? In the first case, the Left argues my funds are being used to take care of the poor; but, how is that different than the robber who will using my funds for the same thing? The Left claims the high ground to coerce and manipulate people out of their money. It uses these arguments by saying government will allocate and distribute the money more efficiently and equitably than private institutions. In the end , all taxes do is fund government jobs and grows the State assuring the need for yet more taxpayer money.
  • Global Warming: There is this blatantly repeated mantra that the science on global warming is “settled.” When is anything in science settled? Consider these once settled items: the earth is flat, the planets revolve around earth and earth is the center of the universe. Remember, the question for the Left is not so much whether there is any warming but whether human activity is the major contributing factor to such warming. The fact is human beings do have an effect on the planet. And, yes we have done terrible things to it including the annihilation of numerous species. I would argue humans do have a big effect on climate change given all of our industrial production; but, so could a myriad of natural phenomena such as weather, solar flares, hurricanes, and/or earthquakes. There are other factors with greater magnitude and historically documented impact than what we humans can do. The threat of global warming/climate change disaster is about fear, manipulation and profit…all being used by the political class to collect more taxes and power to support their one-world, Socialist agenda.
  • Health Insurance:  I don’t think anything owes anybody anything. I can’t outsource my health. Its my personal responsibility to be mindful of  what I eat and maintain my body so that I don’t get sick. We have been conditioned and trained to run to doctors to cure us when, in reality, they should be in place to support disease prevention, not as station of last resort. For example, car insurance works because it supports the right behavior. If I need new tires or an oil change, I pay for it myself with many companies competing for my business. But if I get into an accident or cause major damage, I use my car insurance. Similarly, I would gladly pay for catastrophic health insurance that would only cover emergencies such as cancer; but, that option is not available here in the U.S.  Inexplicably, the Left was ecstatic over the passage of universal healthcare under Obama. They knew veterans have been covered by that plan for years and the V.A. is widely recognized as an total failure and abomination.  Had healthcare been allowed to evolve under free market principles, medical costs would have collapsed the same way the cost of televisions have collapsed as quality improving exponentially over time.

We all need basic principles and values to provide a framework for living our best lives. This is what a creed does. So, you can choose between a creed, such as the one I follow, that assures me of my inherent divinity as a child of God and worth His benevolent guiding hand or you can choose the Leftist Creed that assures you that without government intervention you are doomed to poverty and destruction of the planet.

Free Will. You choose.

Why Comey and President Trump Don’t Matter

I like to know. Knowing comes from personal experience… not reliance upon another’s experience then trusting or believing their interpretation. That’s why I watched every minute of the Senate Intelligence Committee’s hearing and questioning of former FBI Director Comey’s testimony today. Which is why I know some things with certainty.

Director Comey stated that he “doesn’t know him [President Trump] well enough to read him.” Yet, the Director attributed certain intentions to the President that had no basis in fact but were rather the Director’s attributions upon which he subsequently relied in choosing to either act or refrain from acting.

Director Comey never before memorialized any conversation he had with any former President or other official of the FBI, CIA or Justice Department, yet he memorialized every one with President-elect Trump and President Trump.

Director Comey was careful to qualify many of his attributions with the words “I could be wrong.”

Director Comey chose not to proceed with either 1) a recommendation for prosecution or making public former Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s improper efforts to have the FBI characterize the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email server activity with language that mirrored the Clinton campaign’s characterization rather than that preferred by the FBI.

Director Comey admitted to deliberately using a friend, who is a professor at Columbia University, to leak to the Wall Street Journal notes from a confidential conversation he had with the President of the United States.

Director Comey stated that the President never attempted to interfere with the FBI investigation into Russian efforts to influence the 2016 election.

Director Comey testified that the President said ” it would be good” if the investigation found that any “satellite” people who were a part of his campaign were found to have wrongfully colluded with the Russians. (Good in the sense of getting to the truth).

Director Comey said the President was never the subject of investigation, a fact the Director never made public or, for that matter, leaked.

I don’t know what the Democrats, Obama supporters, Hillary supporters, or the #NeverTrumpers hoped to find today, but whatever jackpot they expected to hit turned out to be much more of a vindication of the President and insight into a very selective enforcement mindset on the part of Director Comey’s decision making process than anything else.

This President may not be the Chief Executive of your dreams, or mine, but that is not cause for a witch hunt that is harming the nation and keeping us divided.

Read history.

We have had Presidents who were greedy, foul mouthed, corrupt, bigoted, stupid, immoral, philanderers and more. We survived them not because the opposition took them down. We survived them because the Constitution remained the framework for our rights and liberties as well as our restraints upon government and the Supreme Court upheld what that framework set forth.  All manner of Presidents, and bureaucrats, bring with them upon arrival their politics and idiosyncrasies and take them when they go. Yet, the Republic remains as it was intended: land of the free; home of the brave.

So, rather than getting all caught up in the sideshow distractions, let’s focus on what matters. President Trump appointed Neil Gorsuch to U.S. Supreme Court and will likely appoint one or two additional “strict constructionist” Justices during his term or terms as President.  All is well.                                      Carole

Trump To End War Against Nuns

One of the most vile things of ObamaCare was the contraception mandate that all organizations  provide contraception and abortion services in their plans, including religious organizations. For Catholics abortion is a mortal sin and one of the most heinous crimes one can commit. In addition contraception is not allowed and any serious practicing Catholic knows this.

Instead of the Obama administration allowing exceptions under religious beliefs, the administration was adamant that groups like ” Little Sisters of the Poor” , provide these services. Clearly anybody in this organization does not need to offer any of these services but the administration was relentless that groups like this cave.

The Obama administration took the Nuns to court where it ended up on the Supreme Court and where he lost by a unanimous decision.

“The Supreme Court issued a unanimous decision forcing the Obama Administration to “arrive at an approach going forward that accommodates [the LSP’s] religious exercise while at the same time ensuring that women covered petitioners’ health plans ‘receive full and equal health coverage, including contraceptive coverage.’”

It was a no-brainer case; that’s why it was unanimous. The accommodation should have happened from the beginning. But it didn’t. Even after the decision, as you can see by the news reports now, the government continued to drag its feet, unwilling to set the sisters free. It is a mark of shame on President Obama’s legacy that he left office without relieving the Little Sisters of the Poor.”

Donald Trump has finally relieved the sister of this burden. For more on the story:

What Has President Trump Done Now?

President Trump just announced his decision to pull out of the Paris Climate Accord. He set out, with specificity, the reasons why. The economic disadvantages it imposes upon the United States, the intentional redistribution of wealth from U.S. taxpayers to other signatories who have fewer obligations yet greater freedoms to pollute, the imposition upon U.S. autonomy in making its own energy decisions, and its infringement upon the freedoms given us by our Constitution.

I thought the speech was great. To paraphrase Michele Obama, “Today was not the first, but it was certainly one of the days I am proud of my country.”

But, I have a dear friend who is as distraught as I am happy. She believes that the decision to withdraw is grave error because it’s all about “protecting planet earth.” On this she and I are in agreement. It is important to protect the planet. Where we diverge is that the Paris Climate Accord is the way to do that.  My friend voiced two strong opinions. I’d like to address them both.

First, that since we already committed or “gave our word” it’s important that we keep it.  As lifelong friends, she knows how important I think integrity is so keeping one’s word is high on my list…just not at the expense of one’s life. And certainly not when the word was given by those who will only experience the benefits…not given by those who will suffer the consequences of being bound to it.

The Paris Accord disproportionately binds the U.S. economically. It restricts our autonomy and harms our workers. Those elitists and politicians who negotiated it will be on the receiving end of its profitability and inside deals on carbon credits. Those who had no say, the average working American, will bear the financial burden and become the beasts of burden by being forced into less available and lower paying jobs as a result of more jobs going overseas.

So, if you commit me to something about which I had no say, and that to which you commit me is antagonistic to my well being, don’t expect a friend of mine who shows up and who has the ability to undo what you bound me to… not to do so. That’s what President Trump did. He undid what former President Obama did and what Obama did was not in the best interest of this nation. However, and more importantly, it was not in the best interest of the planet. This is what I would have my friend understand.

One more behemoth bureaucracy will solve nothing. That is what the Paris Accord is in its present condition. It is the latest iteration, this time global, in concentrating too much power in the hands of too few in order to enslave the many.

If you spend billions, perhaps trillions, of dollars to allegedly reduce the temperature of the planet by a fraction of one degree over the next 25 years…but allow one polluting member (China) to burn enough dirty coal in 5 years to negate the benefit…well…who gets happy from that deal?… other than the Al Gores of the world who can afford to create and trade on a carbon credit exchange.

Saving the planet is no different than any other moral issue. You cannot legislate morality and you cannot pass binding agreements that demand we become the stewards of the earth that the Book of Genesis demands us to be.

Whether its moral acts toward one another or toward the planet, they will only come through an awakening of our consciousness and a change of our hearts. Such things happen “one consciousness and one heart” at a time. When enough of them have been so awakened and so changed that we reach a tipping point in our collective consciousness…well…that’s when we will save each other and the planet. Not because Angela Merkel, Barack Obama or any other elitist with a political agenda contractually binds us to.

As I listened to President Trump today tell the nation the realities of the really bad deal we committed to, I kept thinking of that line from “A Few Good Men” when Nicholson says, “You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth.” Today, if you took the time to listen, President Trump told you the truth about the Paris Climate Accord. You say you want the truth? If you’re angry, it’s because you can’t handle the truth.

The Last Days of Night

If you want to be inspired by what goodness of heart and purity of purpose look like but also want to understand the scope of corruption that has existed between the private sector, government and media as far back as Tesla and Edison, then you must read this truly brilliant novel by Graham Moore. Its historical fiction par excellence!

Prison Time

A good friend of mine was recently released from prison after serving three years for a fraud conviction.  He had proof of his innocence but wasn’t allowed to enter it into evidence. As he put it ” The District Attorney and the police conspired together to convict me and they succeeded.”

He told me his story and shared the inadmissible evidence. I personally know this guy and his character. I believe him. But, we live in an age of rules, regulations and laws that make it difficult for even the most honest of people to stay within the law. And, of course, we have different laws for different people. (Hilary Clinton serves no time).

Naturally, my friend was more than concerned about finding a job following his release. Surprisingly, he found one fairly quickly. Today, he is back on his feet. He does not feel stigmatized. In fact, according to him, his story now makes great dinner table conversation! The response that he gets from colleagues and peers, once they found out about his prison stint, is, curiously, indifference.

Why?

We now live in a society where everyone knows the system is rigged.  There is no stigma attached to having been in prison because the general public knows it can happen to anyone. Well, almost anyone. (Remember Hillary Clinton?). Simply stated, people no longer trust our police or the legal system.

When I was in high school, I took Russian Studies and learned about the Russian Revolution and the horrors of the Gulag. The Gulag was established by Joseph Stalin. It was a work camp that existed from  the 1930’s to the 1950’s and imprisoned around 14 million people. The writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn wrote many stories about the horrors of the Gulag and his books describe the terrible circumstances that innocents suffered. The Gulag became a prototypical symbol of an out-of- control-government and a warning of what could happen to you on its whim. Later, schools taught students about the Gulag to warn others about the perils of an overzealous government forcibly condemning its people to imprisonment.

Remarkably, the United States penal system has has now surpassed the Gulag in terms of the sheer number of those imprisoned.  What is more shocking is that our prison population has reached an ominous milestone over the past few years. The number of Americans who were in jail and prison, including former inmates, is approximately 19 million people as of 2010. This number exceeds the 18 million people who endured Soviet Gulag incarceration between 1929 and 1953.

The Conservative media seems to gloss over this story. I listen to quite a bit of Conservative talk radio on a daily basis and all I hear from the pundits is how free our country is. But how free can a country be when we have the highest incarceration rate in the world?

I have both traveled and worked in other countries. I can state firsthand that we are not, in many ways, the freest country in the world. I have been amazed by how much easier it is to do certain things in other countries. For example, I found the medical care and dental care in Australia much more affordable and accessible than here in the U.S… without all of the paperwork. I was amazed how easy it was to do business in Hong Kong. The city is now considered the best place in the world to start business. Take a listen:

When I worked in banking in the U.S., I had to be licensed and regulated. My emails were continually monitored. My conversations taped. Anything we sent out was vetted by lawyers. Americans have become so enslaved and yet we think all this monitoring is “freedom.” If I had broken any of those myriad of laws and regulations, I could have easily ended up in prison…like my friend.

Our ever-increasing laws are complex and arbitrary, which greatly reduce our freedoms and daily ensnare more and more of us.

For example, Martha Stewart was convicted and went to jail for making money on a trade (“insider trading”) that harmed no one. Yet Stan O’Neal, who bankrupted one of the largest financial firms in the world (Merrill Lynch), causing the loss of billions of dollars and thousands of jobs, walked away unscathed. No jail time, millions of dollars in personal profit and the unfettered ability to start over again. When most Americans hear this injustice they siply shrug. We have come to expect these inequities and unequal application of the law.

There is no longer fairness in our justice system.

The increasing incarceration rates and resulting diminution of our freedoms is partially caused by the move to criminalize all manner of activity; but especially drugs. Whenever the U.S. has cracked done on drugs, it understandably worsened the problem. Alcohol provides the classic example: It wasn’t much of a problem before the enactment of Prohibition in 1920, and it hasn’t been one since its repeal in the 1930’s

The Prohibition of the ’20s turned the Mafia from a small underground group of disconnected individuals into centralized big business. It turned citizens and businessmen into criminals. “The War on Drugs” has done the same thing for drug dealers. Its turned petty drug dealers into kingpins. (As an aside, “The War on Poverty” has created more poor people. You’d think we’d stop making war).

Making a product illegal artificially turns both users and suppliers into criminals. The illegality makes the product vastly more expensive than it would otherwise be and opens the black market floodgate that draws in not only more seasoned criminals but also entices those who alter the substances with deadly fillers in order to maximize profit.  Crime becomes a health crisis as well.  In addition, many users who become addicted are driven to crime to finance their habits. Because of the risks and and reduced supply, profits for suppliers are huge and, therefore, attract the most greedy and ruthless people to run these organizations.

When you combine corrupt law makers with a corrupted justice system then add prisons and illegal activities run for profit, you create a dysfunctional and deadly incentive to arrest and imprison people. Such is where we have arrived.

Welcome to the Land of the Free.

Space Tax

Although the government has been slow to change given all of the technological advancement over the years, at least California is getting ahead of the curve by setting up the taxes for future space launches. Good to see California has its priorities right.

“We have seen the future, and it is more taxes. The state prides itself on the presence of innovative companies, especially in Silicon Valley, but if it wants a brighter economic future, it should learn to take a more hands-off approach, whether it is the treatment of exciting new ventures whisking goods and people into space or the more terrestrial and mundane pursuits of other businesses that provide economic opportunities for workers and needed goods and services for consumers in California and across the globe.”

F*ck Donald Trump

This is what it has come down to in California, John Burton a longtime California power broker getting a group of Democrats to chant together and in unison”F*ck Donald Trump.

Here is an excerpt from the article:

“In a sign of the vigor of the party’s distaste for the president, outgoing party Chair John Burton, a longtime Democratic lawmaker and powerbroker known for his blunt and profane manner, extended two middle fingers in the air as the crowd cheered and joined him.”

It looks like the power brokers of the Democratic party are gearing up for an all out assault this summer.

Colbert and His FBI Moment

Last week Donald Trump fired James Comey, Director of the FBI. As the announcement was made public, comedian Stephen Colbert was live on T.V. and interrupted his monologue to tell his audience the news. The audience cheered. Colbert, visibly shocked and displeased with the response said, ” Wow we must have a lot of Trump supporters here.” Nothing could have been further from the truth. Colbert hosts The Late Show which, for the most part, is left-leaning comedy that roasts Conservatives…not attracts them.

Since the media and the Democrat party had, for months, been bashing Comey for his role in “costing Hilary Clinton the Presidency,” the generally Democrat-leaning audience thought the news of Comey’s firing was a good thing. Its no secret that Stephen Colbert hates President Trump. Therefore, his audience was cheering for an outcome they thought Colbert favored. Imagine their shock when Colbert lashed out at them for being Trump supporters because of their applause.

Colbert’s shock and problem stemmed from the fact that his audience simply hadn’t gotten “the latest memo” from the Left on how they were supposed to think and feel about the issue. The good little lemmings didn’t know they were now supposed to hate Trump for firing the very person who was investigating the alleged Trump-Putin connection. You see, the Trump-Russian narrative had overtaken the previous narrative that “Comey cost Hillary the election.” The lemmings were a bit behind.

Let us be clear. If it is proven by the newly appointed Independent Counsel that President Trump actually colluded with the Russians he should resign or be removed from office. Its just that to-date, there simply is no such proof. Not one scintilla of evidence. Yet the calls for resignation and impeachment are rampant.

Why, and how, is this so?

Its because the vast majority of Americans have stopped thinking for themselves. There are several reasons why:

  1. The sheer volume of 24/7 data and information flooding into our lives and our minds;
  2. The ever-increasing pace of technological development and our efforts to keep up with how it is impacting our lives for the good and for the ill;
  3. The deliberate agendas of the far Left, the Communists, Socialists, radical Islamists and Fascists to take down the United States (this their common end regardless of individual interests);
  4. A media that has lost its true purpose (to impartially inform) and is in bed with and controlled by a political agenda and, last but not least,
  5. When overwhelmed its easier to abdicate thought and let someone else do it for you.

Numbers 1-5 above have led too many Americans to number 6. But Free Will is like a muscle. Use it or lose it.

There is no greater freedom than the freedom to think for one self…to see one’s life and the world through your own unique perspective based upon your own experiences. It is freedom of thought that has provided the life-saving process by which POW’s in every war have survived despite their external circumstances or the lies told them by their captors. Former President Ronald Reagan said, “Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. Those who have known freedom and then lost it have never known it again.”

Americans are on the precipice of relinquishing freedom of thought. We are like POW’s who have given up the ability to think for ourselves and have acquiesced to the manufactured, external lie perpetrated by our captors. Its just that in our case the captors are the media, our politicians and those in the financial and private sectors who are reaping the rewards of our willingness to give up the God-given ability to think and choose for ourselves in exchange for enslavement. The red pill or the blue pill? You pick. And pick wisely because one of them is your last pick.

My Son The Marine

A beautiful article about the son of a wealthy New England father and his son who elects to join the Marines. Having been a former Marine, I always feel remorse over the many sacrifices my brothers have made. Here is an excerpt:

“Before my son became a Marine, I never thought much about who was defending me. Now when I read of the war on terrorism or the coming conflict in Iraq, it cuts to my heart. When I see a picture of a member of our military who has been killed, I read his or her name very carefully. Sometimes I cry…”
